The number of holidaymakers coming to Ireland between January and September increased by a further 600,000 visitors, according to the CSO.

More importantly for the Irish economy, revenue from overseas visitors to Ireland grew by a further 9pc during this period, an additional €304m.

Tourism Ireland chief Niall Gibbons said it was particularly encouraging to see an increase in visitors from Great Britain, mainland Europe and North America.

“The CSO release shows the economic significance of overseas tourism,” he said.

With just two weeks left in the year, the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) confirmed that 2016 will be a record year with over 1.1m flights.
