They led by just 1-3 to 0-4 at the interval but produced a devastating performance after the break to crush the visitors.
The Banner’s opening goal came in the fourth minute when corner-forward Gearóid Cahill grabbed the first of a hat-trick, putting his side 1-2 to no score ahead.
Tom Looby and Mick Devine (with Waterford’s only point from play of the game) replied as the visitors improved, but poor shooting let them down in a period of rare dominance.
Tom Barron added two frees, but in between those scores, they shot six wides.
After the break, Clare seized control and went on the rampage scoring at will.
Ross O’Doherty had an early goal. Cahill hit the crossbar with a venomous effort and then netted twice.
O’Doherty grabbed his second and Clare’s fifth, in injury-time, to complete the rout.
The Banner county will now have home advantage against Tipperary next Wednesday evening, while Waterford’s interest in the competition is over.
